Kazimierz Dolny is a popular tourist town in Poland . It is situated in the eastern part of the country, in Lublin province. The picturesque town has a population of about 3 thousand. Due to the architecture it is considered the Renaissance jewel.

Jews in Kazimierz Dolny

In the 16th and 17th century the town was very important for the entire region as it was the center the trade in grain. The history of Kazimierz Dolny is closely connected with the Jewish community which brought economic prosperity in this part of the country. Jews were granted first privileges in the 14th century by King Kazimierz III the Great (Kazimierz Dolny was later named after him) . Two hundred years later, John III. Sobieski extended their privileges even further, as he freed the Jews living in Poland from taxation. This period was the golden age for the entire Jewish population in Poland.

Second World War

True disaster came when the Nazi in the neighbouring Germany seized the power and attacked Poland. At the end of 1930s there were about 1400 Jewish citizens in Kazimierz Dolny, which was a half of the entire population. After the Nazi occupation, Jews were forced to work in labor camps and build sidewalks from the gravestones of destroyed Jewish cemeteries. In 1940 , a Jewish ghetto was established, and all Jews from the town and its surroundings had to move in. Within two years the Jewish community was liquidated. After the war, a memorial was installed on the site of the former ghetto, which is dedicated to the victims of the Nazi terror.

The most significant Renaissance monuments in Kazimierz Dolny are the parish church of St. John the Baptist and St.Bartholomew, and also the house called Przybyłów. It is situated at the square. Everywhere in the town you can find fine houses, perfect examples of Renaissance architecture. Other attractions include the castle ruins and the remains of the synagogue, destroyed during the Second World War.
