Kazan is one of the largest cities of the Russian Federation . It is the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia, and the centre of the Volga Federal Circle. Kazan is situated in the European part of Russia , at the confluence of the Volga and Kazanka River. Kazan is an important transport node in Tatarstan. There is an international airport and a river port.


Kazan was probably founded at the beginning of the 11th century by Volga Bulgars. In 1408 it began minting its own coins. The same period is connected with the oldest buildings in Kazansky Kremlin. In 1438, when the Golden Horde split, Kazan became the capital city of the Kazansky Khanate. It was the time when the city was greatly developing and its importance was growing. Kazan was conquered and annexed to Russia by tzar Ivan the Terrible in 1552. Most of the population of the city was murdered or forced to convert to Christianity. The mosques and the palaces owned by the Tatars were burnt out and destroyed. In 1708, the Khanate of Kazan was abolished. Under the rule of Catherine the Great, the city of Kazan was restored and new mosques were built. At the beginning of the 19th century, the city became a significant industrial centre. At that time, the power and influence of the Tatars was increasing and Kazan developed into an important Tatar cultural and religious centre, first newspaper in the Tatar language appeared and the Tatar theatre was established. After the Russian Revolution, most of churches and mosques were closed and destroyed. They were replaced with factories manufacturing tanks and aircrafts.

Monuments in Kazan

After the fall of the Soviet Union, Kazan became the cultural and religious centre of Tatarstan again. The city has been developing and modernising. The dominating landmark and the most significant historical monument is the Kazansky Kremlin , a symbol of the Tatarstan statehood, listed as the UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site. A new mosque was built in the city - Qolsharif - which is the largest in Russia . At the occasion of the city millennium celebrations (in 2005) a new metro was open. Another important monument is a six-level tower named Söyembikä.

Cultural and industrial centre

Kazan is one of the largest industrial and financial centres in Russia . There are numerous universities and the Russian and Tatar Academy of Science. Kazan is the city of Tatar language, culture and history that have always been connected with the history of Russia .
