Katsuren Castle (Katsuren Gusuku) is a medieval fortress in Japan
. It stands in the town of Uruma on the island of Okinawa
. Katsuren Castle was allegedly built in the 12th century. The most valuable monuments come from the 15th century, when the region was in the hands of Lord Amawari. The monuments discovered, the precious floor tiles and the Chinese porcelain give evidence of the importance of Katsuren Castle as the island's entrance gate for the merchants from the surrounding countries. Nowadays, we can see only the ruins of this fortress. In 2000, Katsuren Castle was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
