Kara Kul
Kara Kul or Qarokul is an endorheic salt lake in Tajikistan. It is located in the north of the Pamir Mountains, in a mountain valley of Gorno-Badakhshan division, Tajikistan. Kara Kul covers an area of 380km2, it is 33km long and up to 236m deep. It is divided into 2 parts by connected channels. Kara Kul was created by a fall of a meteorite with a diameter of 45km. more »

It lies 3,915 meters above sea level and therefore it is too high for any aquatic animals. The largest rivers feeding into Kara Kul are Qara-Jilga, Qaraart and Muzqol. The lake is surrounded by mountains, only a few species of grass grow on its banks. Geological studies have shown that the age of the youngest rocks of lake Kara Kul is 23 to 19 million years. The lake was probably created some 25 million years ago..
