Kamenec Podolsky is the second largest city in the Khmelnytskyi Oblast. It is the seat of the diocese and one of the centres of the Catholic church in Ukraine. During the recent years it became one of the most significant Ukrainian tourist centres. It is very popular with tourists due to breathtaking monuments and rich cultural life. For the historical complex it is considered one of the Seven Wonders of Ukraine. In addition, Kamenec Podolsky is an important economic and educational centre of the region.

Places of interest

In the territory of the city of Kamenec Podolsky you will come across a number of gigantic monuments. The dominating landmark is the castle with the so-called Turkish ramparts, which is one of the oldest Ukrainian castles. It was built in the second half of the 14th century. At present, it is the history museum. Among the other interesting historical landmarks in the town, let´s mention at least the remnants of the town fortifications originating from the end of the 14th century, the old town hall, the Dominican church from the 16th century, the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul from the 16th century, the Catholic Dome and the Turkish Bridge over the Smotrych River. However, there is much more to see and admire in this city. The Old Town is allegedly one of the historically and architectonically richest ancient cities in Ukraine. Tourist usually want to visit the Smotrytsky Canyon, which is a part of the Podolski Tovtry National Park. There are wonderful opportunities for relaxation in the city park called Komosomolskyy or in the Botanical Gardens.

Kamenec Podolsky offers a number of museums. The most visited ones are the already-mentioned museum of history, seated in the castle, the State Historical Museum of Kamenec Podolsky which presents the history of the city, and also the Museum of Art with 120 000 exhibits.

Kamenec Podolsky is a venue of numerous cultural events, festivals, and theatre and music performances. The most important of them are : the Terra Heroica Festival that features reconstructions of historic battles and tournaments, the multicultural "Festival of Seven Cultures" and the artistic "Festival of Free People". Another important celebration is the City Day. Kamenec Podolsky is well-known for annual Ukrainian championships in flying balloons and for car races.

History

The area of the city of Kamenec Podolsky was inhabited in the ancient times already. The city was founded at the turn of the12/13th centuries but it is first mentioned in 1374.

The nearest airport is in Chernivtsi (Chernivtsi International Airport) , approximately 70 km far from the city of Kamenec Podolsky. The railway station is in the western part of the city.
