Kłodzko is one of the oldest towns of Silesia. It is situated in Poland , in Lower Silesian Voivodeship, in the centre of the Kłodzko Valley, on the Nysa Kłodzka river. It is a popular visitor’s destination thanks to its rich history that left many monuments and sights behind.

History

Today’s town area was colonized in the 1st century BC. The town was founded in the 10th century. In 981 it was first mentioned by the chronicler Cosmas of Prague. Kłodzko gained town rights in 1233. It is a place with long history, during centuries it was a major trading centre. It was under the reign of the Polish, the Bohemians, the Prussians and the Austrians. This is why Kłodzko has a lot to offer today. It has a population of around 30,000 people.

Fortress Kłodzko

The most important tourist sight is the town fortress. It is the biggest and the most preserved fortress in the whole Poland . It was built in the 17th century in the Dutch fortress style during the reign of the Habsburgs. It has been altered and enlarged for the next 200 years. There are several interesting exhibitions inside, like the one of firemen vehicles, contemporary glass works or an exhibition about the place’s history. The main attraction of the fortress are defence tunnels. The path through the labyrinth is 1 km long and it takes about 40 minutes to take the guided tour. The temperature in the tunnels is only 8°C and the humidity is almost 100% so dress well if you go there. Tours begin each hour and the entrance fee is 6 PLN. It is open for public during the whole year.

Kłodzko Underground

The town’s underground is very interesting, too. Its entrance is located near the fortress or in the Old Town. It is a 600 m long corridor under old houses through their cellars from the Middle Ages. The underground was almost forgotten when it was not in use anymore. It was revealed when several houses came down for no apparent reason. In the 1950’s the complex was renovated and connected into one long passage making it an interesting ten-minute walk which is very refreshing in summer days. It is accessible all year long and the entrance fee is 7 PLN.

Other Sights

The most significant sacred building in the Kłodzko town is a parish church from the 15th century. Organ recitals are being held there often. The main square called Plac Bolesława Chrobrego is situated nearby. In its southern part, several buildings with renaissance and baroque decorations were preserved until today. The town hall was built only a hundred years ago because the old one disappeared in a fire. If you want to know more about the town’s history visit the regional museum in Łukasziewicza Street 4.

Tourist Service

There are many accommodation possibilities in Kłodzko. You can rent a room in Casa d'Oro or in the Korona Hotel. Cheap accomodation is provided by the PTSM youth hostel or a camp called Nr. 132. To eat well visit a restaurant called Ratusz, it is said to be very nice, or you can eat in the Romano pizzeria. Traditional Polish food is served in the Nad Wodospadem restaurant. Cheap and good alternative is the bar Małgosia.

Transport

The town is accessible by car, bus or train. The closest international airport is in Wrocław (Copernicus Airport Wrocław) . By car you will reach Kłodzko by taking the road E67 and roads No. 46 and 33. The bus station is located near the train station Kłodzko Miasto, which is closest to the centre. Kłodzko Główne train station is mostly used for long-distance travelling. The buses and trains go regularly to the village of Kudowa-Zdrój and to Wrocław . Two check-points on the border with Czech Republic are near the town. The first one, Kudowa-Zdrój - Náchod , is about 35 km away; the other one, Králíky - Boboszów , is about 40 km away. A bus goes from Kłodzko to Náchod every day, too.
