The Juche is a tower which is 170 m high. It belongs among the most important monuments in the city. The Juche tower was built in honor of the 70th birthday of North Korean leader. The tower has a square base and it narrows towards the top. It consists of 25 550 blocks of granite. This number is symbolic because it represents the calculation 365 (number of days a year) multiplied by 70 (age of Kim Ir Sen at the completion of the tower) . At the top of the tower Juche, a 20m high torch was installed , whose weight is 45 tonnes. It is illuminated. At the foot of the tower, there is a 30m high sculpture comprising three characters - a factory worker , a farmer and an educated employee. In addition to these three characters, there are also other six smaller groups of sculptures, each of then 10m high. They represent other aspects of the North Korean ideology. The monument is completed with 82 memorial plaques that were donated from abroad.
