Jihlava Underground Labyrinth is a system of underground passageways, shafts and old sewerage lines. It is located in Jihlava in the central part of the Czech Republic. The total length of the Jihlava Underground Labyrinth is 25 km. It is the second largest underground system in the Czech Republic.

The passageway system and its origin

The passageways are cut into the rock and under some houses in several (up to three) storeys. The first level is made in the depth between 2 and 4m and you can descend to the second level which is located from 4 to 6m under the surface. The last, third level is in several houses only. It is from 8 to 14m under the surface. The first storey was cut in the course of the 14th century while the other two levels were added in the 16th century. In the 17th century some of the passageways were reinforced with brick. During the last century (in the sixties and then in the nineties) the underground passageways were repaired and made safer. Now they are 0.8 to 2.5 m wide and 1.2 to 3.5 high. The Jihlava Underground Labyrinth was open for the public in 1957. At that time, approximately one kilometre was made accessible. In 1969 the Jihlava´s underground was closed and it was not reopen until 1991.

Shining Passage

The biggest curiosity of the Jihlava Underground Labyrinth is the Shining Passage which was discovered by amateur speleologists in 1978. The passage is covered with a thin whitish surface layer capable to absorb light and phosphoresce. The Jihlava Underground Labyrinth is open every day from April to October.
