Jerusalem is a holy city in Israel. It is a sacred place of Jews, Christians and Muslims. The city is situated in the mountains of Judah, on the edge of Judean desert . Jerusalem is one of the longest inhabited cities. The first record about the settlement comes from 20th centruy BC. In 10th century BC is Jerusalem the capital of Israel. It is called David's city. In 6th century BC it was captured and destroyed by Babylon army. The city was not restored until 3th century BC. At the beginning of our era it became a part of the Roman Empire. It is a period of Jesus Christ. Around 130 AD Jews unsuccessfully revolted and were expelled from the city. From 4th to 7th century Jerusalem was a Christian city. In 637 the city was conquered by the Muslims. From 1099 to 1187 and from 1229 to 1244 the city was in the hands of the crusaders. In 1244 the city was acquired by the Arabs. Jerusalem was in their hands until 1517. From 1517 to 1917 is Jerusalem part of the Ottoman Empire. From 1920 to 1947, the city was capital of Palestine. In 1949 the city was divided into Israeli and Jordanian part. Since 1967 entire Jerusalem belongs to administration of Israel. Jerusalem is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The town has more than 200 historic sights of three world religions. In the middle of the city lies walled Old City from the 17th century. The Dome of the Rock with a nice cupola stands on The Temple Mount. The temple was built between 688 and 691. Near this temple is the Western Wall, the holiest Jewish site. Originally a temple stood on this place built by King Solomon but was destroyed in 586 BC. Later on, another temple was built and also has been destroyed by the Romans in 70. Only one wall remained – the Western Wall. Another popular place is the Via Dolorosa (Way of the Cross) . Route follows the last steps of Jesus Christ. Path leads to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, where is the tomb of Jesus Christ. Often visited place in Jerusalem is Gethsemane garden. In this garden, Judas betrayed Jesus. Over 2000 years old olive trees still grows at this place. Jerusalem is also a modern city with new residential neighborhoods and supermarkets. In Jerusalem reside The Hebrew University and the National Library. The most famous museum is Museum of Jerusalem , which holds a large collection of archaeological finds, including the so-called Dead Sea Scrolls. In the city currently live more than 720 thousand inhabitants. The city Jerusalem was registered in The UNESCO World Heritage List in 1981.
