Jelenia Góra is an ancient city in Poland . It is situated in the southwest of the country, in Lower Silesia Voivodeship near borders with Czech Republic . It has a population of about 87,000 people.

About the City

Jelenia Góra is situated near the junction of the Bóbr and Kamienna Rivers, in a valley surrounded by the Krkonoše mountain range, Rudawy Janowickie, Kaczawskie Mountains and Jizera Mountains . It is a good place from which you can set off your hiking and cycling trips in summer. In winter, there is a variety of quality ski resorts and many cross-country skiing trails. The city is a part of Euroregion Nisa. In the past, ironstone-mining and weaving were important to the economy of Jelenia Góra. In the 90’s, many people came to the city because of large markets. These are being held until today although not as much as before. Nowadays people tend to shop in local shops or department stores. Jelenia Góra is the seat of Jelenia Góra County.

Tourist Facts

The city of Jelenia Góra is rich in architectural gems. One of the most significant buildings is the Church of Saints Erasmus and Pancratius built in blended styles. Chojnik is a ruin of a castle that was burnt down in 1675. You cannot miss a stone fountain with a statue of Neptune and a town hall, both from the 17th century. Interesting is a story behind the Holy Cross Church, a baroque building which the architect designed as a copy of the Saint Catherine Church in Stockholm . There is also the Church of Saints Peter and Paul from the 18th century in Jelenia Góra. You can see some remains of the city’s fortification along with two towers. The Theatre of Cyprian Kamil Norwid is a very interesting building. Of all squares in Jelenia Góra, the Market Square is the most beautiful one. The city also has its own spa Cieplice which is one of the oldest ones in Poland. There are two nice guided tours in Jelenia Góra. A short city tour (5 km) that follows the most important sights and a long city tour (20 km) that leads even to the city’s surroundings and is suitable for cyclists.

Museums

There are some interesting museums in Jelenia Góra. The Scientific Museum, offering local fauna and flora exhibitions or The Karkonosze Museum showing the history of mining, old crafts and the largest collection of glass artifacts in Poland.

History

The city was founded at the beginning of the 12th century on an area of a former Slavonic merchant village. The first written record comes from 1288 when the city was already germanised. In 1592, Jelenia Góra gained city status. At the beginning of the 20th century, a railway was built from Jelenia Góra to a Czech city of Kořenov. After 1945, the trans-frontier traffic was interrupted. Since 2010, the railway is in service again, mainly thanks to the volunteers. The Germans living in the city were displaced from Jelenia Góra after World War II.

Jelenia Góra is accessible by car, bus or train. The closest international airport is in Wrocław . By car take the highway No.3 (E65) . Since 2010, trains go to Jelenia Góra also from Czech Republic . Buses are operated mainly in regional routes.
