Jeddah is the second largest city in Saudi Arabia. It is located in the south-western part of the country, in the Makkah Province.

Gateway to Mecca

It is considered the main business centre of the Saudi Arabia. It is the wealthiest city in the Middle East and even in Asia. Jeddah is the principal gateway to the holiest Islam´s city, Mecca .

History

The city, situated on the coast of the Red Sea, with a large desert to the east from the city, was founded as a fisherman village some 2500 years ago. The importance of the city was increasing after the year 647, when Jeddah was owned by the Muslim caliph. The city has always been an important harbour and a starting point for visits to Mecca. In 1177, Jeddah became a part of the Arabian Empire. In 1254 it was included in the Mamluk Sultanate, and it was the time when the first fortress was built. From 1517 to 1916, Jeddah was a part of the Ottoman Empire. In 1925 the city of Jeddah was given the name of the Al-Saud dynasty.

Beginnings of humankind

According to legends, this city is the place where Eve, the very first woman, was buried.

Splendid architecture

The historical part of Jeddah is well-preserved. In the centre of the city you will see traditional, multiple-storey buildings. The most interesting, and also very well maintained is called Nasseef.

Tallest fountain ever

The most important place in Jeddah is the King Fahd Fountain, built in 1980. The water from the fountain reaches high up to 312 m. The fountain was listed in the Guiness Book as the tallest in the world.

City of skyscrapers

There are several skyscrapers in Jeddah, of which the tallest ones are the NCB Tower, the IDB Tower and the Jeddah Magistrate Tower. The NCB Tower is 235 m high and it is the seat of the National Commercial Bank. This bank was the first bank in the Saudi Arabia. The IDS Tower is the residence of the Islam Development Bank. The Magistrate Tower is the tallest building in the city.

Arts, education, sports and tourism

The city is decorated with sculptures and other works of art, either under the open air or in various facilities. There are several has several universities in Jeddah. The city is proud of the oldest sports club in Saudi Arabia. There are several football clubs and football is the most popular sport. Tourist frequently visit local bazaars and beaches with coral cliffs. The population of Jeddah currently stands at over 3.4 million.
