The first inhabited territory was the area around the harbour. The settlement and the harbor were named Kalapa. In the 12th century, this was the main harbour of the Kingdom of Sunda, that is why even today the harbour is still called Sunda Kalapa. In 1527 the port became the domain of the Sultanate of Banten. On 22dn June of the same year, the city of Kalapa was renamed to Jaykarta. This day is considered the day of the establishment of Jakarta. In 1619 the city was occupied by Dutch troops, who gave the city a new name - Batavia. In 1921 the city became the capital of the Dutch East India. In 1811, the island was invaded by the British. The city received its current name - Jakarta, only after it became the domain of Japan in 1942. In 1949, Indonesia was established with Jakarta as its capital. In the district Koka, visitors can still see the remains of the fortification from the 16th and 17th centuries.
The most interesting places in Jakarta are the National Museum of Indonesia, the Masjid Istiqlal Mosque and the Monas monument. The museum was built in 1778, it was also called Gedung Gajah ("the Elephant Building") because of the statue in front of it. The Masjid Istiqlal Mosque is the largest building of its kind in Southeast Asia. The construction of the mosque began in 1961, and lasted 17 years. The mosque covers an area of 5 hectares. The Monas Monument, or the so-called Suharto's Monument, is a symbol of Indonesia's fight for independence. The monument, built by the dictator Suharto, was completed in 1975. In the height of 100 m, there is an outlook gallery in the monument. In Jakarta, visitors can see many more sacral building, e.g. the Chinese temple Dharma Djaya, Jewish synagogue and a Christian church. In present days, Jakarta has about 9 million inhabitants, however there are more than 18 million people in agglomeration.
