Itsukushima is a shrine in Japan , situated on the island of Itsukushima, in the city of Hacukaichi. Itsukushima belongs to the most popular tourist attractions of Japan. Its foundation dates back to 6th century, but it received its current appearance in 1168. The shrine as well as its gate stand on wooden pillars in the bay. In the past, the island was considered holy where no ordinary man could lay his foot, so the people could access the shrine only on small boats. The entrance gate of Itsukushima is 16 m high, and its built of camphor wood. In 1996, Itsukushima was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
