Tourist information and destination rating

Invercargill is the southernmost city of New Zealand . It is located in the southern part of the South Island. Thanks to its location, Invercargill is the commercial centre of the Southland region. It was founded by Scottish immigrants in the 1950s and 60s, what is evident even today. Invercargill is a city with wide streets, many parks and nature reserves. Westward of the city, there are a few protected beaches and hiking trails. East of Invercargill lies the Catlins region full of natural beauties and attractions. The best-known reserve in the centre of Invercargill is the Queen's Park with an area of approximately 1 km2. The next interesting place is the Southland Museum and Art Gallery, which resides in a pyramidal building. The museum shows an exhibition of the humanities and the science history of the region. The 42 m high brick water tower built in 1889 is certainly a dominant feature of Invercargill. The next place worth visiting is the First Presbyterian Church with a prismatic tower, standing in the famous Tay Street. 5 km north of the centre of Invercargill stands the beautiful, Georgian style building from 1925, surrounded by the original bush covering an area of 0.2 km2. Invercargill is a typical metropolis with plenty of accommodation facilities and restaurants, which tourists like to visit.
