Iguazu Falls (Cataratas do Iguaçu, Cataratas del Iguazú) is a magnificent waterfall of the Iguazu River and the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is located at the border of Brazil and Argentina. It is a great tourist attraction in both countries. Rather than a waterfall, Iguazu Falls is a system of waterfalls, and it is the greatest system of waterfalls on the planet. The width of the platform from which the enormous water volume falls down is 2.7 km , which exceeds the world famous Niagara Falls in the U.S.A. The highest waterfall of the Iguazu Falls is rushing down from the height of 82 meters into the ravine known as "Devil's Throat".

The waterfall is surrounded with virgin forest, a part of the Iguazu National Park . The park spreads over the territory of both states. It is a habitat of various mammals and plants, including endemic species. Due to unspoilt nature, the Iguazu Falls and the surrounding are were recognised as the UNESCO World Heritage Site (in 1986) .

Useful Information

Tourist may enjoy the scenic views of the waterfalls from platforms and observation points. Visitor usually want to use the access from the Brazilian side, from the city Foz do Iguacú . Another option is e.g. the Argentinean city Puerto Iguazú . The first European who discovered the Iguazu Falls was a Spanish conqueror Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca (in 1541) . The name Iguazu Falls comes from the language of the native Americans and means “Great Water”. Iguazu Falls was a candidate to become one of the seven modern wonders of the world.
