Hōryū-ji (the Temple of the Flourishing Law) is a Buddhist temple in Japan . It is located in Nara Prefecture, in the town Ikaruga . Hōryū-ji is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Japan . This group of buildings served as a monastery, and also as a school. Hōryū-ji was founded in 604 on the command of Prince Shōtoku. In 670 the temple burned down. Later, by the beginning of the 8th century, it was restored. Inside this complex, we can see one of the oldest wooden buildings in the world. The temple is decorated with frescoes and sculptures proving the influence of Chinese and Korean monastic architecture on local culture. Hōryū-ji was registered on UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993.
