Humenné is a city in the eastern part of Slovakia , in the Prešov Region . It is located at the banks of the river Laborec in the Carpathian Mountains. Humenné is primarily the starting point for tourists heading to the Carpathians.

About the city

The city Humenné has about 35,000 inhabitants today. The most significant monument is the Renaissance Castle from 1610. Today, the museum of the city Humenné is inside the castle. Other places of interest include the Vihorlat Observatory, the Vihorlat Museum and the Exhibition of Folk Architecture and Housing , where you can find the little church of St Michael the Archangel from 1754.

Glances into History

The area of today's Humenné has been inhabited since half of the 13th century. The first written record comes from 1317. The city experienced a great a boom in the Middle Ages, as it was built on the trade route from Poland to Hungary. In the times of Maria Theresa, Humenné was a multicultural city and its official language was Latin. After the First World War, Humenné was annexed to Czechoslovakia and it became a part of Slovakia after the separation of Czechoslovakia in 1993. Since 1996, the city began to prosper due to chemical, food-processing and engineering industry.
