Tourist information and destination rating

Huế is a former capital city of Emperors of Vietnam . It is known for its magnificent architecture although a lot of it was destroyed during the Tết Offensive in 1968. Between the years 1802 — 1945, the capital city of the Emperor’s dynasty was Nguyen.

Forbidden Purple City

Huế is situated in a narrow zone of central Vietnam and it is a capital of Thua Thien-Hue province. A river makes a natural border between the current city and a former Forbidden Purple City full of splendid buildings. Forbidden Purple City and its pagodas and graves were ruined during the ruthless Vietnamese war (1964 —1975) , although the reasons of its importance and pride are still visible until today. Crypts of several significant Vietnamese Emperors are in the proximity of the city. Crypts of Minh Mang and Tu Duc are probably the most impressive ones.

In 1306, the princess Huyen Tran (1287 — 1340) , the wife of the king Chế Mân, was given the kingdoms of Chau Ly and Chau O as wedding presents. In 1307, the king Tran Anh Tong (1276 – 1320) took reign over these areas and renamed them to Thuan Hoa. Huế now noticed the first uprise of the Nguyễns Lords, a feudal dynasty, that reigned over southern Vietnam from the 17th to the 19th century. In 1775, the city was conquered by Trinch Sam (1739 – 1782) who renamed it to Phú Xuân. The name Huế was first recorded in the chronicles of the king Le Thanh Tong in a book called Thập giới cô hồn quốc ngữ văn. Old historical documents mostly use the name Kinh. In 1802, Nguyen Anh Phúc (later an Emperor Gia Long) took control over the whole Vietnam and made Huế the capital of the empire. Huế was a capital of the Vietnamese empire until the year of 1945 when the Emperor Bảo Đại (1913 – 1997) resigned and the Communist Party began to rule the north of the country from Ha Noi . When Bảo Đại successfully claimed himself the head of the state again in 1949 with the help of French colonialists (although never accepted by the Communists and the Vietnamese) , he chose Sai Gon as the new capital. Huế was a central city between Northern and Southern Vietnam during the Vietnamese war. In 1968, the Tết Offensive took place and destroyed the architecture of the city severely and around 10,000 people died. Most of this was done by American bombers and part of it was on behalf of the Communists and their massacres. Under their rule many of the monuments were damaged, too, as the historical buildings were denounced as ‘feudal’ and ‘reactionary’. Since then the politics in Vietnam changed and many of these sights were renewed and renovated.

Historical Sights

Huế is well known for its historical sights that placed this city on the UNESCO list. The Forbidden Purple City was only meant for the Emperors, their concubines and the closest courtiers, otherwise it was dangerous to enter it. An ordinary man could be put to death for crossing the borders of the city. Apart from the beautiful crypts of Minh Mang, Khai Định and Tu Đức, a unique pagoda Thien Mu is well worth seeing. It was built in the year of 1601 and its name means ‘fairy’. French colonial houses were built along the river. There is an interesting museum in Huế. Many cultural institutions focused on visual arts are located in the city and also many music festivals are being held annually.

Well-Known Cuisine

The cuisine of Huế is known for a variety of special kinds of food. It is interesting particularly because of the rough conditions in which it is essential to prove skills to get enough food. Recipes from the whole Vietnam meet here in Huế but the vegetarianism is prevalent in the choice of ingredients. The city has many vegetarian restaurants and local people are used to it because of their religion. Another characteristics of the cuisine is a small size of the pot in which the food is prepared. This remained from the customs of the Emperor’s cooks. The food in Huế is also known to be very piquant.

The infamous monk Thich Quang (1897 – 1963) was from Huế. He demonstratively burnt himself in 1963 in Sai Gonu to protest against the Communists who were after the Buddhists.

There is quite a lot to choose from in Huế. Apart from the luxurious hotels like Saigon Morin or La Résidence Hôtel & Spa, there are several other hotels in which it is possible to fulfill your every need. To visit Huế is to enter a new and unknown world whose purple atmosphere will haunt you everywhere you will go.
