Houston is the most populous city in Texas and the fourth largest city in the USA . Houston has about 2,300,000 inhabitants today.

Historical background of the city

The history of the city Houston began in the first half of the 19th century, precisely in 1836, when John Kirby Allen and Augustus Chapman Allen bought 27 sq km of land there. Allen's brother then called the future city after Sam Houston, a popular general.

Interesting present of the city

Today, Houston is one of the leading cities of American economy. The city was placed at front positions in the category “the best place for trade and work“. Houston is also called the “Space city“ because the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center , from which space flights of American space shuttles are controlled, is situated near the city. The city's industry is specialized in oil production, petrochemical industry and medicine. The company Texas Medical Center, the biggest medical company in the world, is seated there. The Port of Houston is the world's 10th largest port.

Monuments and places of interest

The most sought-after tourist attractions include the town hall, the Rice University, the Wortham Center, the Williams Tower and of course, the already mentioned Space Center Houston. If you are a fan of museums, you cannot miss the Museum District, which is, quite obviously, a district full of galleries, museums and other institutions. The entrance fee to 11 of these museums is free of charge. Houston has the fourth most impressive city landscape in the USA . As for the height of the buildings, it is on the third place right after New York and Chicago . Another popular quarter is the Downtown, where you can see a unique system of underground and above-ground tunnels that connect the buildings together. Houston can boast the highest skyscraper in Texas, the JPMorgan Chase Tower (formerly called the Texas Commerce Tower) . The building has 75 floors and it is 305 meters high. It was also the ninth most expensive building in the US.

Transport

The nearest airport is the George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Within the city, it best to travel by bus or tram, which is the most modern in the USA. Most locals travel by car as Houston has a sophisticated system of motorways.

Culture

Houston regularly hosts various festivals and celebrations. The most significant of them is the Houston International Festival, a festival of various cultures as the city is known for its multicultural diversity. The people living in the city reputedly speak more than 90 different languages. Other important events include the Houston Art Car Parade, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo or the Bayou City Art Festival. There are also opera and ballet houses.
