Houska Castle was founded approximately in the same period (1270 through 1280) as the nearby royal castle Bezděz . The founder of the castle was Czech King Premysl Otakar II. Houska Castle was built on the site of an original stronghold and over the years it was gradually remodelled. At present, you can see a mixture of building styles from the Gothic to the Renaissance. There were various owners during the centuries, e.g. the lords of Dubá, Jan of Smiřice, the Wallensteins, , Princess Hohenlohe or Countess Andrassy. The last owners, Jaromir Šimonek and Blanka Horová, are the descendants of the president of Skoda car factories and a Senator of the Czechoslovak Republic Joseph Šimonek, who bought the castle in 1924. Houska Castle was opened to public in 1999. The castle is known for a number of cultural events , e.g. fairs, musical performances, corporate events with historical elements, or weddings.
