Hoover Dam was built in the 1930’s in the times of world crisis that occurred because of devastating annual floods. The dam is designed as a concrete arch 22 m high and 379 m long and it formed Lake Mead that extends behind 185 km. At some places, the lake is as deep as 180 m. It was named after the President Hoover who initiated its construction.
Hoover Dam still serves its purpose today. It is also a favourite tourist destination who can buy tour tickets and find out more about the dam. First they see the entrance hall with photographs, images and other historical items connected to the construction of the dam. Then there is a short film prepared for them after which they descend with an elevator 150 m down, where is a big hall with generators. Opening hours and entrance fees can be found HERE . Multi-floor parking is available and expect being thoroughly searched before entering the dam.
