Hongan-ji (the Temple of the Primal Vow) consisting of two Buddhist temples can be seen in
Kyoto , in
Japan . The temples were founded in 1321, at the place where the founder of the school Jōdo Shinshū was buried. The temple Nishi Hongan-ji is still hiding many national treasures, amongst them the white study shiro-shoin, the black study kuro-shoin, a large tea pavilion and the oldest theatre stage in
Japan . The temple Higashi Hongan-ji has almost the same layout as Nishi Hongan-ji. The temple garden Shosei-en from the 17th century was built according to the plans of the landscape architect Kobori Enshu and the scholar Ishikawa Jozan. The Hongan-ji was registered on UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994.
