Hong Kong is a modern metropolis and a special administrative region of China. It is one of the world's most important bank and trade centers.
Little bit of history
Hong Kong has been inhabited since the Stone Age. In 1513, the first European visited the city. In 1842, during the First Opium War, China had to render Hong Kong to Great Britain according to the Treaty of Nanjing. In 1860, after the Second Opium War, the United Kingdom gained the Kowloon Peninsula, too. Today, Kowloon is a trade quarter of Hong Kong. In 1984, a new treaty was signed between China and Great Britain and on 1 July 1997, Hong Kong became an administrative region of China.
Tourist places of interest
There are many skyscrapers, modern banks and luxurious buildings in Hong Kong. These modern buildings are situated mostly in the quarter Wan Chai. The most famous site in the city are the two skyscrapers called the Lippo Centre. The most visited attraction are the gardens Aw Boon Haw, where you can find colorful pagodas, statues, caves and various historical buildings. In the city center, there is the Hong Kong Park with lakes, fountains and a museum of tea. Another tourist place of interest is the temple Man Mo with a 150-years old bell. There are several amusement parks in the city, such as the Hong Kong Disneyland and the Ocean Park Hong Kong . You may also visit the Jade Market or the Bird Market. In the southern part of the Kowloon Peninsula, there is an ancient well-preserved fishing settlement Lei Yeu Mun. The Victoria Peak towers above Honk Kong. It is a 552 m high mountain, from which there is a beautiful view of Hong Kong.
