Hobart is the capital of the Australian island state of Tasmania Tasmania . It is situated at the foot of Mt. Wellington (1270 m) , in the estuary of the Derwent River. Hobart is the largest city of Tasmania.

About Hobart

Hobart is the second oldest city in Australia. It was founded in 1804 as a convict colony. There is a large port, and also many interesting buildings in the central part of Hobart, for example, the Parliament building, which was built in the first half of the 19th century. There are several museums and galleries, e.g.the Tasmanian Museum, the Maritime Museum, the Military Museum, the Anglesea Barrack (which is a museum focused on the history of army) , and the Art Gallery with an interesting collection of works of art. The city is proud of the oldest theatre in Australia (Theatre Royal) that was built in 1837. The Criminal Courts and Penitentiary Chapel are other destinations in Hobart to see, as well as the Constitution Dock - the main anchorage of yachts, boats and steamers.

Famous Yacht Race

Hobart is known worldwide for annual Yacht Race Sydney - Hobart.

Other Places to Visit

There are other attraction in the city which are worth visiting, such as the Salamanca Place which is built in sandstone, and there are shops and craft workshops carved in in little caves. At the Battery Point on the cape you can visit a well-preserved old fishing village. The village is surrounded by beautiful parks and "protected" by cannons.
