Hillerød is a pleasant, modern city in Denmark . It is located in the northern part of the Sjælland island, in the district of Frederiksborgs Amt, 35 km to the north-west of Copenhagen . At present, it has a population of more than 38 thousand.. Hillerød is attractive for visitors due to its famous palace, called Frederiksborg Slot , and the beautiful landscape in the surroundings of the lake named Slotsø. The city is an important transport node for the region of northern Sjælland.

Frederiksborg Slot

The main attraction of the Hillerød is Frederiksborg Castle. It was built as a royal residence for King Christian IV. The castle is the largest renaissance residence in Scandinavia. The castle premises include marvellous gothic gardens. The interiors of the Frederiksborg Castle are richly decorated. Total 70 rooms are accessible to the public. The most pompous of them is called Slotskirken (Coronation Chapel) , and its interior comprises an unbelievable mixture of golden frills and rosy-cheeked little angels. Between 1671 and 1840 the room was used for coronation ceremonies. Every Thursday, from 13:30 to 14:00 you can enjoy an organ concert (the organ was installed in 1610) . Other interesting rooms are, for example, the Audience Hall with a chair from the 17th century. The chair was originally used as a lift. Then there is the Riddershalen (Knights´ Hall) which was used as a dining room. A part of the first and second floor is now used by the National History Museum which presents a chronological gallery of portraits of kings, noblemen and outstanding personalities, equipped with unusual furniture. In fact, this is the largest Danish gallery with portraits of all kings and queens since the year 1500. On the third floor, you can find the Moderne Samling, which is a large collection of paintings and photographs from the 20th century. It is impossible to go through all parts of the Frederiksborg Castle in one day. After long tours around the castle premises, you can relax in the castle park.

Esrum Kloster

Visitors who love haunted places and ghost stories should go to the 15 km distant monastery named Esrum Kloster . The monastery is connected with a ghastly tale about a demonic brother Rus, in the 18th century the chef in the monastery. This blasphemous brother would serve the monks with decadent meals, a lot of wine, he would meet girls and speak to the Satan at evenings. When the abbot got to know about all this, he had the brother Rus tortured to the death on his own kitchen grill, which is on display in the monastery even at the present time. Blood spots are resistant to any and all attempts to clean them away. It is widely believed that the monk´s spirit can be seen in the monastery at night. The Esrum monastery is accessible from Hillerød by bus No. 305 or 306.

Other tourist attractions in Hillerød

You can also visit the city museum called Bymuseet that presents the history of the city, and the ruin of Æbelholt Abbey, formerly the largest Augustinian monastery in Northern Europe. Another interesting exposition can be found in Kedelhuset where you can study everything about the history of the northern part of the Sjælland island, from the ancient to medieval times. Outdoor people can take a trip to the forests in the surrounding area. The local forest named Gribskov is the second largest forest in Denmark.
