The High Aswan Dam is situated in Egypt . It lies in the southern part of the country, on the River Nile, about 17 km from the city of Aswan . The High Aswan Dam is also known as the New Aswan Dam or the so-called Lake Nasser. The reservoir covers an area of 6,000 km2 and extends well into Sudan . It is 480 km long, up to 16 km wide and the volume of the water is 164 km3. Due to these proportions is the High Aswan Dam the largest artificial lake in the world. It was built to prevent the annual flooding of the River Nile, to provide water for irrigation and for power production. Initially, there was only the Low Aswan Dam on the River Nile, but it could not withhold such an amount of water. That is why in 1952 Egypt decided to built the High Aswan Dam. Financial support came from the former Soviet Union. In honour of the Soviet Union, a monument of Arab-Soviet Friendship stands at the lake. The High Aswan Dam consists of a dike with a pyramidal shape, which is 3,6 km long, 980 m wide and 111 m high. Up to 11,000 m3 of water can flow through the dam per second. It was built mainly from granite, the core of the dam is made of cement and clay. The construction began in 1960, and it was completed in 1971. Nevertheless, the High Aswan Dam has been filled up with water only in 1976.
