Helsinki is the capital and largest city of Finland . It is the biggest port in the country. The local naval fort figures in the UNESCO World Heritage Site List.

Historical background of the city

The city Helsinki was founded in 1550 and it has about 570,000 inhabitants today. From the very beginning, the city has been strongly influenced by the Russians. Their role in the region grew even more after 1703, when Saint Petersburg was founded. At the beginning of the 19th century, Finland was annexed to Russia. Helsinki was heavily damaged and the city got a new look in the Empire Style. After 1917, when Finland declared independence, the city was rebuilt in functionalistic and classical style. After the Second World War, the city experienced a great boom. A new congress center, a new opera house or the Modern Art Museum were built. In 1952, Helsinki hosted the Olympic Games.

Places of interest

The most famous monument in Helsinki is the former naval port Suomenlinna, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are many religious buildings, e.g. the evangelic cathedral Senaatintori. There is an amusement park and a ZOO in Helsinki. The nearest national park is Nuuksio, where you can see many natural monuments. There are many museums, galleries and theaters in Helsinki.

Transport

Transport in Helsinki is provided by underground, trams, buses, fast regional trains and ferries. From the old port, you can board ferries to Korkeasaari and Suomenlinna and many sight-seeing ships.
