Hawa Mahal , or Palace of the Winds, is a major landmark and a famous tourist attraction of Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, India. Maharaja Sawraj Pratap Singh built Hawa Mahal in 1799. The palace was designed by Lal Chand Usta, who also planned Jaipur city or Pink city. Its unique five-story exterior is also comparable to the honeycomb of the beehive with its 953 small windows that are decorated with intricate lattice work. Hawa Mahal was originally designed for the ladies of the royal household to observe everyday life and processions in the city from their veiled comfort. It was built by red and pink sandstone, which rises to a height of 50 feet (15 m) from its high base, along with carefully and beautifully carved and outlined with white border and motif. Its facade makes Hawa Mahal look more like a screen than a palace. Visitors come here to get a view of the facade and they can also climb to the top for a wonderful view from the latticed windows. There is also a small archaeological museum there.
