Hamilton is the fifth largest city in New Zealand . It is located in the inland of the North Island, on the banks of the Waikato river, the longest river in the country. Hamilton was originally a military settlement established in the 19th century. The banks of the Waikato River are bordered with beautiful parks and gardens with many paths and trails. Probably the most popular tourist attractions of Hamilton are the gardens in the south. The gardens have a number of pavilions with exhibits of Japanese, Chinese and English gardens, and also a lot of lakes and fountains. A steam boat called MV Waipa Delta leaves three times a day from the centre of Hamilton. It sails down the Waikato River, so the passengers can see the most beautiful parts of the city shrouded in green. The Waikato Museum of Art and History Hamilton, standing above the river, offers an extensive collection of Maori artifacts. The most interesting of them are the war canoe Te Winika and a large number of artifacts from the history of Waikato and Hamilton. The western and the eastern parts of the city are connected with several bridges. Probably the most interesting one is the Victoria Bridge. Hamilton is very well known by the lovers of hot air balloons from all over the world, thanks to its annual Balloons Over Waikato festival, organized by the city.
