Haarlem or Harlem is an administration centre of the Noord Holland region in the Netherlands . It is located approximately 20 km to the west from Amsterdam . The city is situated on the Spaarne River, in a fertile land which is world-famous as the tulip bulb-growing district (this is why it is nicknamed the "flower city") . At present, Haarlem has a population of approximately 150 thousand.

History

The town of Haarlem was founded in the 8th - 9th century. It was granted its charter in 1245. The town of Haarlem was one of the centers in the Holland County and for some time it was the residence of the Counts of Holland. In the 14th century the ramparts were built around the town. In the 16th and 17th century the town of Haarlem was an important centre of textile production and art, too.

Monuments in Haarlem

The historical core of Haarlem offers numerous architectonic monuments from the 17th century. The most significant building is the Frans Hals Museum with a gallery that features paintings created by Haarlem master painters. The gallery is situated in a beautiful, four -sided building from the 17th century, originally a poorhouse. A part of the premises is a medieval apothecary, an exposition of crafts and typography. On the opposite side you can admire little hospital houses that were built around 1610. They were changed into the Centre for Architecture and Civil Engineering and the Museum of the History of southern Kennemerland. Just in the centre of Haarlem you will come across one of the most beautiful squares in the Netherlands with a basilica built in the Gothic style. Its name is Grote of St. Bavokerk and it is dedicated to St. Bavo. There is the City Hall, too. It was originally a gamekeeper chateau and after the fire in 1351 it was reconstructed in the Gothic- Renaissance style. There are many other important buildings and other monuments in the city of Haarlem, for example, the Stadswaag (Renaissance building, built between 1597 and 1598) ; the Gravestenenbrug (bridge over the Spaarne River) , the Amsterdamse Poort (the only preserved town gate) . There are several interesting churches in Haarlem, e.g. the Janskerk and Waalse Kerk. The cathedral - Kathedrale - Basiliek St. Bavo - is one of the largest spiritual buildings in the Netherlands. Haarlem is notable for many hofjes (almshouses built around courtyards. Nowadays there are 19 hofjes in Haarlem. They had been built from donations by private donors and were used as poorhouses and workhouses. In addition, there are numerous museums in Haarlem.

Activities

The visitors to Haarlem usually love to go sightseeing, take a cruise or visit flower markets.
As regards the surrounding area, it is recommendable to visit one of the largest children playgrounds in Europe - Linnaeushof in Bennebroek (300 attractions) . Not far from Haarlem you will come across the Zuid Kennemerland National Park.
