It is one of the last natural habitats of the rare Sumatran Orangutans, the Sumatran Rhinoceroses with two horns and the Sumatran Elephants. The village of Bukit Lawang is one of the starting points, as well as the best known rehabilitation centre for orangutans held in captivity. Due to the huge differences in altitude and to the diversity of the ecosystems, Gunung Leuser National Park abounds in plant species. It is estimated, that 45% of the 10 000 species of plants recorded in Indonesia can be found in the ecosystem of Gunung Leuser National Park..
