Guildford, the county town of Surrey, is a popular tourist destination in the UK, located app. 50 km (31mi) from London. The most sought attractions are the remains of a small Norman castle, the High Street with buildings of the Tudor era, such as the Guildhall, and mainly the dominating modern red-brick Cathedral (1954). Guildford stands on the end of the North Downs, which is a range of chalk hills which are popular for hiking. There are two distinctive spots, Leith Hill (the highest point in southeast England) and Box Hill. In the surrounding area, among the great variety of historic sites, tourist attractions and nature sanctuaries are, for example, Chawton with Jane Austen's House and South Downs National Park.
