Guia Fortress (Fortaleza da Guiais) is a former military complex and the UNESCO Site. It is located in Macau , in its eastern part on the Guia Hill, which is the highest peak on the Macau peninsula.

About Guia Fortress

Guia Fortress is a complex of building which comprises a fortress, a lighthouse and a chapel. The fort was built in 1638 in order to protect the border between China and Macao. The ground plan of the Guia Fortress is an irregular pentagon. It served to its purpose until 1976, when it was opened to the public. The lighthouse was built in 1865. It is 15 meters high and it has 7m in the diameter, but it narrows towards the top to 5 meters. It is considered as the oldest surviving lighthouse in the region. The Chapel of the Virgin Mary is located on the top of the Guia Hill. It was built in the 17th century and its interiors are beautifully decorated. Guia Fortress ranks among the most visited tourist destinations in Macau. The historical center of Macau has been the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005.
