Gryfice is a historical town, distinctive with brick architecture and numerous monuments. It is located in the north-western part of Poland , approximately twenty kilometres from the Baltic Sea. It is very attractive for tourists, in particular for beautiful surroundings, which offers wonderful, not very difficult terrains for biking. Last but not least, local cultural events are interesting, too. At present, the town has a population of approximately sixteen thousand.

History

The town of Gryfice was founded in 1262 by the Duke of Pomerania. Some hundred years later, the town joined the Hanseatic League (an economic alliance of trading cities and their guilds) , which greatly supported its development and growth of its economic power. As Gryfice used to be a part of the historic region of Pomerania (Germany) until 1945, it was originally called Greifenberg. By the end of the Second World War, the whole region was included in Poland and the name of the town was changed to Gryfice.

Architecture and monuments

The most valuable part of the town is the historical core of Gryfice as there are numerous buildings that were built in the gothic and renaissance style. The oldest structures originate from the thirteenth century (remnants of original ramparts) . The town architecture is distinctive with brick, and you can find similar architectonic approach in some other towns in this region, too.

St. Mary´s Church

This religious structure is a wonderful example of gothic architecture. It was built at the end of the 13th century. The tower comes from the 15th century.

Neo-Gothic Church

This church is much younger and more modern as it originates from the beginning of the 20th century. Since 1954 it is administered by the Orthodox Church.

High Gate

The stone gate in Gryfice was a part of the ramparts. It was built in the 15th century. There are numerous similar structures in the town of Gryfice.

Offer for tourists

One of the most popular buildings in the town is the Culture House, where e.g. concerts and dancing balls take place. There are several museums and galleries, and public sports centres as well. Restaurants and accommodation facilities in Gryfice are very good.
