About the castle

Grodziec Castle was built in the second half of the 15th century by the prince Frederic I of Legnica. When he died his son Frederic II had the castle developed thus one of the most beautiful castle residences in Silesia was created. During the Thirty Years´s War, the castle was nearly destroyed so the owners decided not to repair it. Major reconstruction did not come until 1900. The owner , Baron Dr. Willibald von Dirksen, had the project designed by a renowned architect , Bodo Ebhardt. After the reconstruction, Grodziec Castle was visited by a number of prominent personalities, including, for example, Emperor Wilhelm II. Later, the castle was put under the administration by the Silesian History Lovers Association. The association established a museum, a restaurant and a tourist hostel. At the end of the Second World War in 1945, Grodziec Castle burned down. After the reconstruction, Swedish and Russian filmmakers have used the premises as the settings for various films and series, such as the Riket and Empire Reality Shows.
