Gonio Fortress is the oldest stronghold in Georgia
. It is situated in the southwestern part of the country, about 15 kilometres from the city of Batumi
, in the village called Gonio. Gonio Fortress lies on the coast of the Black Sea, 4 km from the borders with Turkey
. In present days, Gonio Fortress is a very popular and often visited site.
The village of Gonio was founded in the 8th-7th century BC. Gonio Fortress was builit in the 2nd century as a Roman fortress. During the Byzantine Empire, it was also used as a stronghold. Gonio Fortress got its current appearance after a reconstruction in the 16th century. The total length of the walls is 900 m. The five metres high walls and 18 pieces of 7 m high towers have been preserved.
