Ghent is a historic city in Belgium . It is situated in the north-western part of the country, in the region Vlaanderen, i.e. East Flanders. It lies on the confluence of rivers Scheldt and Leie.

Bits of history

The region of the today's city has been inhabited since the Stone Age. The name of the city is derived from the Celtic word “ganda“, which means “confluence of rivers“. At the beginning of our era, it was under the Romans' power. It was founded as a Roman settlement. The Romans' rule ended in the 5th century when the Francs came and settled the region. In the Middle Ages, the city Ghent was a significant and prosperous Belgian center. In that time, it was just a little bit smaller than Paris and bigger than for example London. Today, Ghent is an important port and an university city. The large local port is connected to the sea by a canal.

Touristic attractions

One of the most significant monuments is the St Bavon Cathedral . You will get a view of the whole city from its tower. There is also the historical quay Graslei with the typical Flemish houses and the museum of industrial art. Not far from the quay, there is the Gravensteen Castle . Today, the city Ghent has about 240,000 inhabitants.
