Gerlachovsky stit or Gerlach is the highest mountain in the High Tatras
and in Slovakia
. It is 2655 m high. Gerlachovsky stit is relatively easy to reach and due to beautiful surrounding nature and mountain sceneries it is one of the most frequently visited mountain peaks. The first trail to climb up to the very top of the summit was recorded in 1855 but it is supposed that it was, in fact, in 1834 already. It was Ján Still , a German from Spiš (a teacher at Catholic school in Nová Lesná) . Gerlachovsky stit is accessible from two sides. The first route begins in the valley of Velická dolina, from Sliezsky Dom (approximately 4 hours) . The other trail, recommended for descending, is led through the so-called Batizovská próba and Batizovská dolina to Sliezsky Dom. From the top of the mountain, the ridge continues to Kotlový štít, where the famous Gerlachovský kotel (hollow) had been formed. The climb up to the top of Gerlachovsky stit is on permission, with a guide. You can book the guide at the Mountain Guide Association (Phone: +421 52 442 20 66) .
