About George Town

George Town is located in the northwest corner of the island of Penang, about 350 km northwest of the capital city of Malaysia the city of Kuala Lumpur . The city was founded in 1786 by Francis Light - the captain of the British East India Company. Francis Light gained the island of Penang from the Sultan of Kedah. A hundred years later, George Town became a city of the European style, with markets, banks, churches, commercial port and narrow streets.
