History of the city
Gelendzhik was founded in the 4th century B.C. as a Greek merchant port. In 1829, according to the Peace Treaty of Adrianople, the coast became a part of the Russian Empire. In 1831, fortress Gelendzhik was built on the place of today’s city in order to protect the coast, and in a short time a town developed around it. The first sanatorium was built there in 1900. 7 years later, Gelendzhik became an official healing resort. It gained the status of city in 1915. The present
