Gödöllö Castle was built by Count Antal Grassalkovich I in the first half of the 18th century. Since 1867 the was the residence of the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I and his wife Empress Elisabeth. The castle has the ground plan in the shape of double U. Over the years, it was remodelled several times. In 1994 the castle became the property of the Royal Chateau Gödöllö company, who takes care of reconstruction work.
The Royal Chateau Museum was opened on the chateau grounds in 1996. Inside the castle palace nine halls, a banquet hall and a part of the residential rooms were opened. On the ground floor of the chateau palace there is a stylish chateau cafe. Various cultural events and concerts take place on the courtyard.
