Forte dei Marmi is a sea town and comune located in the northwest Italy . It is situated in the region of Tuscany Riviera (Riviera della Versilia) , half-way between holiday resorts La Spezia and Viareggio , 65 km to the north-west from Florence (Firenze) . At present, Forte dei Marmi has a population of approximately 8 thousand. It belongs to the region of Tuscany .

History and monuments

In Italian Forte dei Marmi means "fort of the marbles". The city was named after the fort that had been built by Leopold II, Holy Roman Emperor, in 1788. You can visit the reconstructed fortress that rises in the middle of the main square, and the other remarkable architectonic structures, too. Forte dei Marmi was developing due to successful trade with marble. Anyway, its "golden" period came at the beginning of the 20th century, when it began to change into a luxurious holiday resort.

Tourism as the main activity

Forte dei Marmi lives on tourism. During the holiday season, the number of the population in the town grows nearly three times. Visitors mostly come from Germany, Russia, Italian Florence and Milano. Forte dei Marmi is attractive for clean sandy beaches and breathtaking views of the neverending blue sea. The cleanness of the beaches and the surrounding areas is regularly awarded with the "Blue Flag". The picturesque atmosphere of the region is accentuated with the peaks of the Apennines on the Italian land. They Apennine Mountains are frequently visited by tourists, too. Challenging hikes are rewarding - from the height you can overview the whole territory of the Riviera. Forte dei Marmi belongs to luxurious Italian resorts. There are numerous first-class hotels, and Italian celebrities often buy villas in this locality (for example, fashion designer Giorgio Armani) .

Interesting events in Forte dei Marmi

Forte dei Marmi is well- known as the venue for concerts, both classic and modern music, and theatre performances, too. Forte dei Marmi is popular for jazz concerts, theme evening shows and performances for children, and also for village fairs that traditionally take place in Forte dei Marmi and in the surrounding villages every week. The traditional fair at the main square takes place every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. It is worth mentioning the St. Francis Fair in the nearby village of Victoria Apuan, which is held once a year (on St. Francis´s day) and occupies more than 1000 m2. The traders offer a great variety of goods, from clothes to souvenirs, but the prices are often too high. Perhaps the reason is that Italian traders expect you want them to bargain prices...
