Fortaleza do Pico was built at the beginning of the 17th century as a part of the defense system of the city Funchal . The island was often attacked by pirates back then. In the 20th century, the fortress Fortaleza do Pico became the residence of a postal and radiotelegraphic company, which was later replaced by a naval radiotelegraphic station. The local inhabitants began to call it Pico Radio for the many antennas on its top. Since 1943, the fortress Fortaleza do Pico became a national monument. It is owned by the Portuguese navy now.
