It is a unique fortress- situated on a hill unlike all the other fortresses by the coast. Fortaleza do Pico was built at the beginning of the 17th century as a part of the defense system of the city Funchal . The island was often attacked by pirates back then. In the 20th century, the fortress Fortaleza do Pico became the residence of a postal and radiotelegraphic company, which was later replaced by a naval radiotelegraphic station. The local inhabitants began to call it Pico Radio for the many antennas on its top. Since 1943, the fortress Fortaleza do Pico became a national monument. It is owned by the Portuguese navy now. One part of the fortress is accessible to the public, where you will find an exhibition dedicated to the history of the fortress.
