During this period, Fort Santiago came to be a strategic point on the trade route between America and Europe. The fortress is surrounded by walls, which are 6,7 m high and 2,4 m wide, and with a 12 m high entrance gate. During the Second World War, Fort Santiago was besieged by Japanese troops, and later it was seriously damaged in the Battle of Manila . In 1980 Fort Santiago was reconstructed, and the fortress is now a home to a museum..
