Fés is a historical city and the UNESCO Site in Morocco . It is located in the northeast of the country, in the region Fés - Boulemane. The city Fés was founded in the 9th century AD. It is famous for the university Al-Karaouine which was founded in 859 AD - and is the oldest continuously operating university in the world. Tourists usually come to admire the palaces, mosques and fountains. Fés is a traditional artistic and cultural center of Morocco . Currently it has a population of over 1 million. Since 1981, the old city was inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
