Ferrara is a city and comune in Italy . It is located in the northern part of the country, in the region called Emilia-Romagna, on the Po di Volano, a branch channel of the Po River. Ferrara is the capital city of the Province of Ferrara. At present, it has a population of approximately 135 thousand.

History

The locality of the today´s city was settled in the 4th century already. The first mentions of the town of Ferrara come from the year 753 A.D. The town was greatly developing during the period of the 14th - 16th centuries, in particular due to the noble family d´Este. At that time, Ferrara was a significant cultural centre as it was a place where numerous European artists used to live and create their pieces of art. There is a lot of well-preserved Renaissance monuments, which contributed to the selection of Ferrara as the UNESCO World Heritage Site (in 1995) . Between 1598 and 1859, Ferrara was included in the Papal States. In 1859 it became part of Italy .

Tourist attractions

Today´s Ferrara is a popular tourist destination. The most significant monument in Ferrara is the castle - Castello Estense - which is situated at the very centre of the city and surrounded with a moat. The other frequently visited sights are: the ancient City Hall, earlier residence of the d´ Este family; the Cathedral of Ferrara also called Cathedral of Saint George from the 12th century; the Diamond Palace (Palazzo dei Diamanti) former Cartesian monastery (Certosa of Ferrara) ; and the Casa Romei, the best-preserved Renaissance building in the town. Other very popular localities in Ferrara are the square Piazza Ariostea, the Ferrara Synagogue and Jewish Museum, and medieval fortifications. There are many other interesting palaces, historic buildings, religious buildings and museums in Ferrara. In addition, Ferrara is a significant cultural centre. The opera house of Ferrara (Teatro Comunale Ferrara) has been in operation since 1798. There is also the University of Ferrara, which was founded in 1391 already.

The city is renowned for cultural festivals, for example, the Palio of St. George, traditional medieval festival that takes place every last Sunday in May or the biggest street music festival called the Buskers Festival. Every year, the Ferrara Balloons Festival, the biggest Hot Air Ballons Fiesta in Italy (and Europe) takes place in Ferrara.

Transport

Ferrara is easy to access by car, train or by plane. By car, you can take the A13 Motorway from Padova and Bologna . Total 33 trains arrive to Ferrara every day (railway between Bologna and Venice ) . The nearest airport is in Bologna (Aeroporto G. Marconi di Bologna) , approximately 45 km. You can move around the city on bike, by bus or you can use local taxi services.
