Fedchenko Glacier is the longest glacier in the world outside of the polar regions. It is 77km long, covers 900km2. It is located in the Pamir Mountains in the north of the Gorno-Badakhshan division, Tajikistan. Width of the Fedchenko Glacier is 1000m maximum and its volume is estimated to 144 cubic kilometers. It lies at an altitude of 6,200m above sea level, melts at an altitude of 2,909m above sea level and empties into the Balandkiik river. Fedchenko Glacier was discovered in 1878, it was partly investigated by Germany-Soviet expedition in 1928. The highest peaks of Pamir Mountains can be observed from almost anywhere on the glacier. There is a meteorological station on the glacier at an altitude of 4,200m above sea level which is the highest meteorological station site in the world. Meltwater from Fedchenko Glacier feeds an extensive infrastructure of hydroelectric plants of Tajikistan
