Espoo is a city in Finland . It is located in the southern part of the country, at the Finland Bay. Together with the neighboring cities of Helsinki , Vantaa and Kauniainen, it forms an agglomeration called Greater Helsinki. The city Espoo has about 237,000 inhabitants today, which makes it the second largest city in Finland . The famous automobile racer and a former Formula 1 pilot Kimi Räikkönen was born in Espoo.

About the city

Espoo is a modern busy city. The city has two official languages. Most of its inhabitants speak Finnish but there is a big Swedish community, too. Espoo is divided into 7 main parts, the most important of which is the Vanha-Espoo (administrative center) . The headquarters of the Nokia Company is newly based in Espoo. The Helsinki Technical University is situated in the city. The city is best-known for the Espoo Convention on 25 February 1991, an international pact on Environmental Impact Assessment.

Places of interest

The biggest tourist attractions in Espoo include the Espoo Cathedral, which is the oldest preserved building in the city and the castles Espoon kartano, Pakankylän kartano and Träskända kartano. An old King's Road runs around the firstly mentioned, which features a beautiful stone bridge from 1777.
The most popular museums in Espoo are the Museum of Modern Art EMMA or the Kellomuseo dedicated to clocks. The museums are located in the same building.


The city Espoo offers both sports and cultural activities. Tourists that prefer spending their time in nature can visit the Nuuksio National Park located within the city. You can also ride a horse or play tennis, golf, minigolf and bowling. As for culture, you can visit the Espoo Cultural Center that hosts many interesting theater performances and concerts.

The area of the today's city has been inhabited for 9,000 years. The city as we know it today was founded in the 15th century. Espoo gained the status of a city in 1972.


Espoo is easily accessible by car, bus, train, ship and plane. It is best to travel by air- you will land at the airport in Helsinki and then continue by bus, train or a rental car to Espoo. You can also take a ferry from Helsinki . By car, follow motorway n.1 (E18) or road n.50 (E18) .
