Erzurum is a historical city in Turkey . It is situated in the eastern part of the country, at the altitude of 1,950 m above sea level.

Little bit of history of the city

Erzurum was founded around 4,000 BC. Since then, the city was in the hands of many different rulers. At first, it was ruled by the Anatolian tribes, later came the Romans, then the Persians, the Byzantines, Arabs, Seljuqs and Mongols. The last conquerors were the Turks in 1514. In the 19th century, Erzurum served as a fort defending the inhabitants from Russian attacks but the city was still occupied by the tsarist Russia three times. After the empire disintegrated, it was Mustafa Kemal Atatürk who established the Council of National Delegates on 23 July there.

Monuments in Erzurum

Today, Erzurum is the capital city of the Erzurum Province and it has about 420,000 inhabitants. The most significant monuments are the Great Mosque from the Sulejman era and the madrasa Çifte Minareli Medrese , depicted on the city's coat of arms. There is a memorial of the Russo-Turkish War and many other mosques and memorials. Another popular tourist attraction is the local archaeological museum, which presents various historical artifacts from all the already mentioned rulers of the city.

Gourmet city

Erzurum is known as the center of gourmets. The famous Bunda Kebab that has spread all around the world comes from the city. Another popular specialty is the local nut dessert Kadayıf Dolması.
