The Engelberg Abbey lies in the mountain town of Engelberg . It is one of the five monasteries in Switzerland . This Benedictine monastery was founded in 1120. The Engelberg Abbey had burned out three times over the years, yet it has always been restored and renovated. The interior of the monastery is decorated with carved wooden walls, which are the works of the local monks. The monastery church has a number of altars, and it was built in baroque style. In 1851, the Engelberg Abbey founded a secondary school for boys. In 2000, vocational schools were opened here. The Engelberg Abbey is partially opened to the public. Today, there are about 30 monks permanently living and working here.
